Work on stem cells

Octobre 2016, Cordons de Vie has invited the researchers who have benefited from its support to give them the opportunity to explain their works and their projects. A press conference closed the day and allowed members and patron to learn a little more on :

  • The results of treatments and transplants for patients with blood disorders as seacke cell desease (1st genetic disease in the world),Thalassemia, leukemias and lymphomas.
  • Stem cells and regenerative medicine.

The participants :

Professeur E GLUCKMAN : transplants and sickle cell desease (Hôpital Saint Louis Paris et Centre Scientifique de Monaco-Monacord)

Professeur M LEBOYER : Immunopsychiatry (Hôpital Mondor Paris)

Professeur P REBULLA : Use of cord blood for regenerative medicine (Milan)

Professeur D FARGE : Autoimmune diseases (Saint Louis Paris)

Professeur F LOCATELLI : cord blood transplant for children (Hôpital Bambin Jésus Rome)

Professeur A ALTAVILLA et N HILMI : Ethical and legal aspects

Docteur A L RUGGERI : Cord blood transplant for adults (Hôpital Saint Antoine Paris)

Funding for 3 research projects in 2016 approved by the Scientific Committee.

Study on indications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for sickle cell patients.

Professor Eliane GLUCKMAN - France

Allocated budget over 2 years ; 20.000 euros

Study on transplantation in 3-year-old sickle-cell desease -

This study will make it possible to have data over a longer period - 3 years - to conclude and answer the question:  Is the transplant a real solution for sickle cell patients ?

Doctor Françoise BERNAUDIN – France.

Allocated budget over 2 years : 20.000 euros

Natural eye drops from allogeneic umbilical cord blood plasmaThe aim of this project is to produce standardized pharmaceutical eye-drops containing tissue regenerative factors in physiological concentration from plasma from allogeneic umbilical cord blood for the treatment of severe dry eye. – Doctor Paolo REBULLA - Italie.

       Allocated budget: 10.000 euros

Funds for humanitarian actions

Support for the training of the treatment of sickle-cell disease for African doctors. The funds allocated will finance 2 Mauritanian doctors, 2 Burkinabès doctors and one Tchadien doctor, so they can attend the University Diploma of Sickle Cell Disease in Bamako (Mali) in October 2016 at the CRLD : Center for research and control of sickle cell disease.

Allocated budget : 7.000 €

Financing congress - partner structures

REDAC at KAMPALA from 22nd - 24th May 2016. The Paris-based drepanocytosis observatory traveled to Kampala at the congress of the African center network REDAC. To allow French researchers to join this congress, Cordons de Vie has allocated a budget of 2,500 euros.

Our Actions 2015

World Cord Blood Congress and Innovative Therapies in Monaco from 5th – 8th March 2015 at CCAM, presided over by Professor Eliane Gluckman, world pioneer in cord blood stem cells. (for further information www.esh.org )

Allocated budget: 5,000 Euros

The President of Cordons de Vie takes the floor during the congress on ethical aspects. "It is the origin, production and use of stem cells that can give rise" she says "to ethical issues which, moreover, vary depending on the country and laws in force.

The whole advantage of umbilical cord stem cells is that they do not present any ethical issue; their collection, carried out after ligature of the umbilical cord harms neither the mother nor the newborn. Consequently they can enable us to treat and advance research.

Funding for 3 research projects in 2015 still in progress approved by the Scientific Committee.

Post transplant viral infection control.

This study aims to control viral infections, related to the reconstitution kinetics of "NK" cells after transplantation. A better understanding of these mechanisms will allow better management of infections.

Professor Franco LOCATELLI - Ospedale Pediatrico Bamino Gesu Rome

Allocated budget: 15,000 Euros over 2 years

Analysis of stem cell transplants in the fight against sickle cell disease.

This analysis will make it possible to evaluate the efficacy of this type of graft in the treatment of sickle cell disease.

Doctor Maria CAVAZZANNA - Institut Imagine - Hôpital Necker Paris

Allocated budget: 15,000 Euros over 2 yeats

Comparing the capacity of cord blood stem cells and marrow stem cells.

Professor Timoty Devos

Allocated budget: 15,000 Euros over 2 years
